Community yoga in Leeds

Hello, my name is Sally and I am a community and accessible yoga teacher living and working in north-east Leeds. I run affordable and inclusive yoga sessions for under-represented groups in less-advantaged inner-city areas. My classes enable people to come together to move and breath in way that is fun and helps with physical and mental health.

My approach is aimed at everyone, including those with long-term health conditions, starting or returning to exercise, or who are older or have larger body types.

Leeds Community Yoga

I am in the process of setting up a not-for-profit community organisation, Leeds Community Yoga. My aim is to obtain funding to provide marginalised groups with access to yoga and its benefits.

About me

I am a 300-hour accredited yoga teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga and I have been teaching for over nine years. I am also an Accessible Yoga Ambassador. I recently completed a PhD in health promotion that looked at barriers to yoga access for marginalised groups. I have written a book on my research and articles in The Independent. I am also a part-time academic researcher in the School of Health at Leeds Beckett University.

Religion

Yoga is not a religion or part of any religion and so is suitable for people of all faiths and none. It arose from ancient South Asia and it’s important to acknowledge its cultural and spiritual roots. But, although yoga is practiced by Hindu people, it’s also enjoyed by Christians, Muslims and atheists. Yoga is a tool to help ‘fast track’ us to a happier, healthier way of being.
